I've never understood
why they call it getting lucky.
Too many times
the sun through the blinds
has shown won-the-lottery lust to be
stale as last night's beer.
Rolling over this morning,
I find myself face to face
with the unluckiest number
(needs three friends to score an eight),
and I wonder if it's too late
to vacate
this crazy space
in my head
that keeps ignoring the odds
and buying a ticket.

Love it, Mama Z ... damn that space that keeps buying a ticket and wasting emotional resources against the odds!
"to vacate
this crazy space
in my head"
I wonder.

oy...yeah, not good to roll over to an unlucky lottery number....esp when your head is already pounding...dang beer goggles...
But somebody's gotta win...eventually...maybe...Pointed and perceptive. Here's to the eventual 'good' luck.
Stopped rolling them bones a while ago, Z. But a poet needs inspiration, right? Cool piece with a great hook. :) xo
Maybe 13 is lucky for some??? LOLOL
You never fail to amuse MZ
Can't win if you don't play, of course such a scary sight might make one want to cash in and run away.
But how can you win if you never buy?
def. think you should buy one..smiles
ooh, ouch. this is fabulous.
against all odds, and there you have it.
Keep buying the tickets. You never know when the jackpot is going to be yours. Loved this.
Great poem, Mama Zen. Always so wicked good!
this poem (and we, the readers) got lucky anyway... ;) - love "won-the-lottery lust to be
stale as last night's beer."
'Won-the-lottery lust' damn.
Nice one, Mama...uh...Mama, uh...what did you say your name was again?
I know the winning numbers ~ they just never show up!!! Pass me a beer.
I got flash backs I use to live in Vegas. Good Job, Mama Zen

I've NEVER bought one, but I've been tempted.
Went to RENO and gambled ... $10 (newly married... we had other things to do :)
But...but...the next one might be the Big One!
Gambling has never worked out well for me either, I have to say--but then, maybe it depends on the game.
I think I am unlucky in this too ~
I love it! Lost the urge to even try though, years ago!!
Tell it, sista.
There is an implied "Good" before Lucky. I've been there myself - went to bed with a young woman, woke up with a crone in a puddle of sweat or beer suds, can't recall which.
Well written truth Mama Z.
Can't take over the world with poetry if we have no coin to fund the army...oh, that's right...where doing just fine without it...fantastic weave!
I guess for some people, it's better than waking up alone. I've always preferred my dogs to lottery lust!
That didn't sound quite right--I mean for cuddling!
gotta wonder...but I've never been much of a gambler.
Love this one...it speaks so well to a chaotic heart. nice one mama.

I didn't mean to be anonymous before lol
oh, very clever and well done.
I love this, MZ! I gave up hoping to pick a winner in this particular lottery a long time ago. But you know what? If you go into it understanding it's not about the big win but the possibility of a big win, maybe you get your money's worth.
Besides as the NY Lotto guys say, "Hey,you never know."
you 've got to be in it to win it... heart break diffused by smarts and bite - V.cool mama
Very cool. Love the use of lottery as the driving vehicle here. Great read MZ. thanks
Win high,
lose low.
Getting lucky is in the mind
of the begotten.
You have a way with words that make the most un-funny of situations... well... funny. I really enjoyed this one, though it may have had serious undertones.
and I wonder if it's too late
to vacate

that keeps ignoring the odds

We women can do this, yes. We think we can turn a sows ear into a silk purse. :)
Nice one...this can get addictive.
Ha! Sounds like it is not too late. As always, wonderfully crisp tone. K.
Make that crisp/jaded. k.
"Rolling over this morning,
I find myself face to face
with the unluckiest number..."
That's me in a nutshell! I don't even bother, 'cuz I know I'm NOT going to win!! Very clever!
Very clever! I rarely gamble, when it comes to dice type games. I do find 13 lucky though ;D
Well Done~
Lottery lust...how creative. I was so young when I got married I never played the lottery. :)
3 friends to score an 8. That's bad.
I never win anything no matter what, thus I have learned to pretty much ignore the lottery. If I invest nothing, I care nothing.
Sometimes it's just better to stay home and read the funnies, no? :) Nicely done. I must have a lucky star or something, not to have had too many of these numbers, I think!
I've wondered the same thing... why it's allied getting lucky and how often do both people feel that way.
Great metaphor...
